The Ouija board is also known as a talking board or a spirit board, and the first one was commercially introduced by Elijah Bond on 1st July 1890. Originally, it was just intended as a fun parlour game, but during World War I, American spiritualist Pearl Curran used it as a divination tool. She believed that the dead were able to contact the living through the board. It is a flat board marked with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0–9, the words "yes", "no", "hello" (occasionally), and "goodbye", along with various symbols and graphics. Participants ask questions of the board, place their fingers on the planchette (a small heart-shaped piece of wood or plastic) and this is moved about to spell out words.
