Aromatherapy uses natural and/or aromatic plant materials and oils, including essential oils, to help improve psychological or physical well-being. Essential oils have been used since the ancient times, for therapeutic, spiritual, hygienic and ritualistic purposes. In 1907, a select few European scientists and doctors put forward the concept of aromatherapy, but it was not until 1937 that the word first appeared in print. René-Maurice Gattefossé, who was a chemist, wrote 'Aromathérapie: Les Huiles Essentielles, Hormones Végétales' on the subject. This book came about after he badly burnt his hand in 1910, and used lavender oil to successfully treat it. From 1948, Jean Valnet; a French surgeon, dedicated his work to finding proof that nature and essential oils can be used medicinally. During Word War II he used such oils to treat wounded soldiers, and over the next fifty years went on to expand his theories in various publications, books and medical journals.
